Roots to Renewal: A Journey from Seed to Garment

Roots to Renewal is an exciting community-driven project that reimagines the lifecycle of clothing by connecting sustainable fashion practices with nature and local culture. This innovative initiative, launching in 2025, takes participants on a transformative journey from seed to finished garment, embracing the entire process of sustainable fashion.

 

At the heart of Roots to Renewal is the cultivation of natural dye plants in community gardens across Doncaster. These vibrant, locally-grown plants will not only enhance the beauty of our garments but also contribute to the environmental well-being of our community. Through a series of engaging workshops, participants will learn how to create their own natural dyes and explore the art of upcycling garments—breathing new life into pre-loved clothing generously donated by Age UK (Sheffield). These garments, once destined for the rag trade, will be given a second chance to shine, infused with new colours and creativity.

 

The project aims to build skills, collaboration, and environmental stewardship, with various hands-on workshops hosted across Doncaster. The culmination of this collective effort will be a dazzling fashion show in November, showcasing the incredible work and designs born from the community's creativity and commitment to sustainability.

 

2025 marks the pilot year for Roots to Renewal, a time to explore, experiment, and build connections. As we grow, we hope to expand the project into a larger-scale festival across Doncaster in 2026, celebrating the power of community, sustainability, and fashion's potential to renew and regenerate. Natural Dyeing
